Biography
From their website:The Mermaid Purse is Eric Shutt (Vox/Gtr) , Justin Wilson (Gtr/Vox), Jason Jones (Bass) and Dominic Weir (Drums). Hailing from Dallas, Texas members of Doosu, Red Animal War, The Feds, and Flickerstick.
The Mermaid Purse concept began as the by-product of years of recording an hashing out songs in the home studio of Eric Shutt. "No fancy gear, no fancy micing techniques, a computer, some software, a bass, a couple of guitars, a microphone, and every bit of free-time I had available." Shutt sais of the early beginnings. After compiling many of the songs that arose from the recording sessions into a full length demo on cd, Shutt gave fellow Texas rockers/tour mates Flickerstick a copy. Passed around by the Flick boys over the next few months to fellow friends and fans while on tour The Purse began to get mention on fan sites nationally, and internationally in the U.K..
Upon returning from a month long tour with Doosu, Shutt ran into members of Flickerstick at a Dallas nightclub. There they approached him about playing the support slot for a concert they had planned for the near future. "I had never really entertained the idea of playing live until I was approached. Justin ( Red Animal War ) and I had always talked about doing some type of project together, but we both ran short on time to write songs together so nothing ever came of it. Honestly I was more shocked that anyone liked the songs at all. I had to tell Brandin ( Flickerstick ) that there was no band, it was just some stuff I did at home. I think that was the night Dominic ( Flickerstick ) told me that he was the drummer in The Mermaid Purse." Shutt says laughingly. Jason Jones would round out the group over the next few weeks. "I was always a fan of The Feds and Jason's guitar playing, so I was pretty excited when he said he'd come in and lay down some bass, or "hot licks" as we like to call them in showbiz'." Shutt explains.
After a few scattered rehearsals The Purse took to the stage to perform live, there must be a few bootlegs of that cd running around, how else could everyone know all the words. When asked what the future holds for The Mermaid Purse, Shutt answered, "I see an album of some sort in the near future be it a release of what is already recorded, or a studio album, ...more live shows are certain,... but most importantly I'm going to have fun with this project, live one day at a time and keep on writing and recording as much music as possible."
