Biography
From their website:The KALM is a modern day rock and roll worship band. Their sound has been described as quietly powerful. Their musical influences span the genres of rock, gospel, funk, and country. The members understand that their band has a higher purpose of inspiration and showing that praise should be glorious. When you witness them live playing together it's easy to see that all egos are left outside, because the music they make is a celebration of the word of God. When asked to describe their mission as a group, all answers vary but all answers are rooted in worship.
Lead singer and acoustic guitar player, James Alexander is the primary song writer. As a founding member of the band James has seen The Kalm grow in faith as well as in style. Today James feels that the band as a great blend of talent and praise. He finds his inspiration in the word thus deriving his song lyrics from his relationship with God. Every word is prayerfully written. Like most great artist his works are a reflection of how he lives his life. His musical talents and his faith are echoed through every song performed.
Philip Davis fills the lead guitarist and back-up vocalist spot. He brings experience and seasoned stage presence to the table. He understands that the emphasis is never on the individuals but the music that they make together. Phillip finds his purpose filling spaces in the music without over playing.
Bass guitar player Mark Nelson is what some might call the seasoning of The Kalm. Finding a good mix between the pocket and the melody is his goal. When asked about his musical ear Mark says "I want to be the bridge between the rhythm and the melody". His bass is married to root notes, but sometimes she likes to hang out with the rest of the scale. You see Mark having the time of his life when he's playing. Without question it is his heart for Christ and love for The Kalm's music that keeps the emotion of the band on focused.
Drummer and back-up vocalist, Aaron Wright, brings the rhythmic anchor to the band. A transplant from Midland, TX, Aaron's training comes from not only the church, but also the class room. Like any great drum player, he sets the pace of the music but he does so without over thinking. He is a late addition to the band, but the moment he sat in it was as if he was coming home to old friends. You also have to mention the amount of dedication he displays; he shows the same focus on a complicated rhythm as he does for a simple 4/4 pattern.
Rhythm Guitar player James Stewart shares with Aaron, classical and organized training. James has excelled at adjusting from technical structure to the more free flowing style of the band. Improvising can't be taught it has to be felt and James is definitely feeling "it".
With influences that vary through Urban, Contemporary and Traditional Gospel; Jazz; Rock; Country; Metal; Hip-Hop; and R&B there is no shortage of style. The common thread is God. To say they have "Faith" is an understatement. Never claiming to be perfect, they are not afraid of striving to be an example.
