MusiciansDFW

MusiciansDFW is an email list hosted by Yahoo! Groups. The group's charter reads:

This is a list for Dallas/Ft. Worth/Denton area musicians, songwriters and anyone involved in the local music business. It is also the official email list for the Dallas Music Webring. My primary goal for this list is to help create a sense of community amongst the many talented musicians and songwriters in this area. I believe that if we can stop viewing each other as competition, and start working together, in the true spirit of music, then we will all be rewarded with greater success.

Why would anyone want to help someone who may later land a gig that they themselves wanted? For me it’s about karma. Whatever your beliefs about life are, almost all philosophies agree that ‘what comes around goes around’, and ‘what ye reap, ye shall also sow'. Another way to look at it is ‘If you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours'. Then of course, there is the golden rule. Regardless, if we help someone from this area, who later lands a record contract and goes multi-platinum, everyone will know where that artist came from, and national music industry executives will pay more attention to our local music scene, thereby benefiting us all. In this dog-eat-dog world, animals survive by cooperating in packs. So must we, if we wish to be successful.

To this end, I have several important things that I want this list to be used for.
(1) The discussion of all things musical.
(2) Finding new band-mates, session musicians, a band to open for you, and/or songwriting partners.
(3) Getting advise from other members.
(4) Making and sharing contacts, from other musicians, to key people in the local music biz.
(5) Getting honest, constructive critiques of your material, from your local contemporaries.
(6) Advertising for your up-coming gig, your web site, your studio, your venue, your equipment-for-sale, and/or your various music-related products or services.

The group was originally created by Michael Raphael for musicians to discuss music, but later was opened up to most topics that musicians have on their minds, which apparently is primarily politics.
