00111: Concert Review
By: RasputinI recently had the chance to enjoy Pointfest 7, an outdoor rock fest put on by KPNT 105.7 St. Louis. Bands included Reel Big Fish, Bloodhound Gang, L7, Matchbox 20, Stir, Social Distortion, and the Offspring. Reel Big Fish started around one pm and got the crowd going with a nice Ska feel. Then Bloodhoud Gang came on, starting with the Star Wars theme song, and sliding into "Kiss Me Where it Smells Funny." There is no feeling in the world like hearing 22,000 people screaming Burn, Motherfucker, Burn. Then came L7, a rockin chick metal band. The lead singer really scared me when, coming back to my seat, I hear her yelling "This is my pussy, thou shalt eat of it." You can imagine how the rest of their set went. Next came Matchbox 20 and Stir, two smaller bands just getting big. Social D came on as the sun was going down and set the punk theme that would reign for the rest of the night. It was about this time that my companions succumed to the effects of the acid they'd been doing all day and ran away screaming at something. Good thing I had my own car with me, because I didn't see them the rest of the night. Finally came the Offspring, and boy did they rock my lame ass. The entire ampetheater went dark, and a familiar voice came on saying "Ahh, it's time to relax... And you know what that means..." Expecting to hear the rest of the message, I stood up to scream approval. But then... "Who am I kidding, you don't want to relax. You all are a bunch of pot-smoking, beer-drinking, moshing bastards!" The crowd roared and the familiar opening strains of "Bad Habit" filled the night air. I jumped from my seat in reserved and ran to the mosh pit already starting in the lawn. The effects of the "Stupid Dumbshit" part were even more dramatic than the Bloodhound's expletives, and as soon as the pit restarted after screaming that part, I caught an elbow in the face. Shaking it off, I went after the fool who did it... and then "Smash" started. I can't remember much more. After the show, I compared notes with friends, some of which couldn't stand the Offspring before seeing them live. Everyone loved them. Except for the Urge (God help you if you've ever heard of them... (Talk to tsb) ) they put on the best live show I've ever seen. If you ever get the chance to see them, DO IT! you will not regret it.
