00111: Basic Electronics
By: wally[ Author's Note: This is basic electronics knowledge needed to build boxes and understand their inner workings. It's also useful in getting a ham radio license, and info on many of these circuit components can be found in ham radio books, magazines, etc. In fact, I used my ham book to check and update some of this info! :) -wally ]
1 Electrical Concepts:
Power is how fast electrical energy is used. It is measured in watts. Volts x Amps = Power or Watts (V*A=W).
.............
/ \ P=power(watt)
/ P \ I=current(amps) See resistance section for usage.
/......................\ E=voltage(volts)
\ | /
\ E | I /
\......|......./
2 resistance:
Resistance is simply resistance of electricity. Resistance is measured in ohms and the part on the circuit that applies resistance is the resistor (confused yet? no? good!). Ohm's law shows the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance in a electrical circuit. This is the basic formula: E=I*R. It states that if you have 2 of the letters, you can solve for the variable. Do not be afraid, the concept is simply enough for pre-algebra students to understand. If you can't remember the bloody diagram, I'm not surprised, my artistic skills leave much to be desired. =) If you can't understand\remember the diagram, use the equations to the right. Memorize these, for they are important. To use the diagram on the left, cover the variable or the thing you wish to know.

/ E \ E=voltage ALSO-> E= I*R
/---------------------\ I=current R= E\I
\ I | R / R=resistance I= E\R
\........|......./
2.1 resistor
The resistor simply resists electricity in a circuit. To find the resistance in each resistor you must know how to use the colored bars.
