Shoeless Driving

By: Dave Balentine

Drive with your shoes off.

In this country of hindered thought, where the written law is held higher than the human conscience, we are so very often confronted with officials who are blindly repeating the same rotting and invalid printed lines of code that are written and taken out of context. Rather than listening to their own personal conscience, they simply take the laws of someone else and repeat them. Laws are written to the lowest common denominator. They are written expecting all of the population to have intent to harm another. The only reason this lowly type of person exists is in response to this inadequate legal system, therefore, a catch-22 sort of situation. I am not saying all laws should be blatantly ignored (well, not directly) because laws are on the whole a good suggestion. They merely point in the right direction, the highest law in the end should be the conscience. The bottom line is that the written law, taken literally, applies to such a minuscule part of society and those people can be dealt with individually, not necessitating creation of more imperfect laws. Here is a quote from an official,

"I would like to do what's best, but I have to do my job"

The law is not to be taken literally, if it is then it becomes the single greatest source of injustice to society.

My point in the title? it is in reference to a Texas law that states it is illegal to drive without footwear. If a law seems inadequate, offensive, and inapplicable, search your conscience and employ all honesty to yourself. If you find a law faulty and unjust, break it, openly and blatantly. Break the law with confidence. So I say now, I will from now on drive with my shoes off.

"It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right"
-Henry David Thoreau
