Faces

By: Dave Balentine

So tell me, how many faces do you have? We go throughout life, day after day, morphing our demeanor and appearance, attitudes and opinions for each new person that comes our way, always hiding the true self, and some of us have even lost track of who that is. We've become so caught up in this pathetic game of imitation and false impressions that we are becoming who we pretend to be. If you pretend to be something long enough it is just like a habit, it catches on and after a while is second nature. At that point it's not a game anymore: it's you. At that point you've changed yourself.

But this is not always bad, who you are and even who you change yourself to become is simply a personal choice and not something that should be argued as to what attributes to a "good" or "bad" personality. What is harmful and painful, most to those around them, are the people who have not become anything, at all. They change for every person, and even show several faces to the same person depending on the surroundings. How can someone with even society's morals, which are terribly flawed in themselves, do this with a secure conscience?

I will state that at this moment I simply am not concerned what reactions I get from people about this email. If every one of you, and myself included would take a look at the whole of society, everyone has a face that changes. Some people are closer to honesty than others, but change their faces out of fear. Some are simply able to change their personalities from minute to minute, never settling on anything. I see that as simply the essence of hypocrisy. This hurts people, breaks friendships, destroys relationships, and burns bridges without hope of redemption. I simply see that type of person as a living lie.

Yes, I am a bit bitter tonight, don't mind me. I am not even interested in how many faces anyone really has, only that they might think about it, maybe admit it to themselves, I know I am personally still trying to figure out how many I have. I have one for my father, one for my brother, one for school friends, one for past friends, one for my best friend (that I think is closest to myself) and countless others for every person that I cross paths with. Now think about this, how many do you have?
