The Dark and The Light

By: Mikael Bernard

I could write this
poem a million times
and it would say
the same thing every time
(Sometimes I think I've hurt
you more by simply being here
and if that's the story, I could easily leave
or die or fade away)
In these very words
There is no retreat because
a word cannot be any closer
to you or me
(Sometimes I peer across the expanse
and trick myself into believing
you hold me close you your heart)
And what is there
that a thousand pages
of a book could say
that I can't
say in two
(Sometimes I would swear that
I've told you all this a million times
before)
Length or refrain cannot
be any more honest
than what I'm saying now
(Sometimes I would believe that there
is more of something that I want than
you and infinity)
Words are hollow, and black and white
and we feel out substance, we know
we are
(Sometimes I know you and you know me)
What we see could be ours
in The Dark and The Light.
