00001: LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

By: Mike Farahbakhshian

If you're reading this, you probably have found out that Digital Darkness has changed yet again. We've decided to abandon the business idea. Why? Here's the quick and dirty explanation: Our product, this magazine, is valued for its purity of form. We feel that linking this product to a business paradigm would mean that eventually we would compromise the purity to make profit or break even. Our printed magazine had poor quality because we did not have the money to spend on printing out thousands or even hundreds of copies of high quality print. We can, however, put high quality graphics and well-formatted text on a Web server or a telnet BBS, and thus circumvent cost issues.

Digital Darkness is moving beyond selling a product that we want the great minds of the world to have. We also are returning to our roots. That's why we are returning to a more 'hacker'-ish mentality, albeit this time around we know much more about programming et al. From the experience we have programming for our respective government contractors, we're more qualified to know what the hell we are talking about. We are, however, keeping the humor, philosophy, and art that has characterized Digital Darkness.

The point here is that we are clarifying our focus group. We've always striven to provide quality education and entertainment to a smarter-than-normal group of people; people who want to learn, people who want to express their ideas. The fact that we live in the Information Age makes it more likely that the people we seek will be like the computer hackers of old, or the artists who too often go unnoticed in the world. But we notice you. And now that we are improving our quality at the cost of profit, we can make a better opportunity for these great minds to have a free forum.

I've said my piece. Now I'll turn everything over to Pat.
